Outdoor clothing is some of the most unsustainable clothing on the market.

Rain wear and weather-resistant clothing is nearly always made of petroleum-based materials and synthetic chemical coatings for their synthetic and long-lasting properties.
What people don't realize is just how harmful these materials are, not only for the environment but for human health. These synthetic materials and "forever chemicals" shed microplastics during both wash and wear.
Every third breath you take, is a microplastic.
These toxic microplastics continuously bio-accumulate in all ecological systems.

In humans, they build up in the body and are able to be passed down in the womb. This build-up can lead to damage in organs and immune systems and increase the chance of diseases.

In the environment, microplastics run through waterways, soil, into animals, and through food chains. This bioaccumulation causes detrimental effects to the biotic components across different ecossytems.

Putting our solution into context

Social

EcoShield provides new research in the area of biomaterials and bio innovation with the potential for entrepreneurial endeavors for a wide range of applications. Relevant to upcoming legislation in regard to clothing composition limitations we are at the forefront of setting the sustainability bar for future outdoor textiles.

Cultural

Targeting the outdoor clothing industry, EcoShield holds context across a number of cultures including the outdoor/adventure culture as well as the fashion and clothing culture. Simultaneously, our product heavily plays into the sustainable and circular economy movement.

Environmental

EcoShield promotes a sustainable product life cycle through a Soil-to-Soil model as a compostable material without PFCs. By replacing plastics with a biomaterial alternative, our product significantly reduces the environmental impacts associated with plastic production.

EcoShield emphasizes a clear need for environmentally conscious textiles, but the context of our project spans across socio and cultural factors as well.
