DWR Finish

An integral part of many waterproof textiles is what is known as a Durable Water Repellent Finish, also known as DWR Finish. Typically made up of toxic chemicals, we approached with a fully bio-based solution.

 

We learned that the most successful alternatives to the toxic PFC-containing finishes had three components–a texturizing component, a low surface energy component, and a cross-linking agent to bind them together. Utilizing Chitosan for its small particle size and its ability to form nanostructures/nanotextures and inherent hydrophobicity, we developed a coating for our exterior fabric layer.

LCNF Membrane

The Lignin-Containing NanoFibrils (LCNF) Membrane serves as a breathable membrane that contains pores large enough to allow water (sweat) vapor to escape from inside of the garment and small enough to keep rain from entering the garment.

Through experimentation, we saw unique qualities of the membrane including a very intrinsic relationship with water, as a portion of the membrane acts in a hydrophilic manner. At the same time, the other portion of the membrane proves to contain more hydrophobic properties.

Fabric Layers

Two textile layers are used to enclose the LCNF membrane, strengthening the structure of the biomaterial and providing a surface to coat with the DWR finish. Ideally, we would utilize a protein-based nylon alternative, such as Spiber™ or Bionylon™.
